Also known as swamp coolers, they work by blowing hot air through pads of cool water, which evaporates thereby humidifying and cooling the air. They need to operate in large well-ventilated spaces otherwise they cannot cool efficiently. They are not ideal in establishments where humidity would damage produce. An evaporative cooler needs to be placed adjacent to an open window. This is because the cooler pulls in fresh air from the outside. The air is pulled through the system which contains a special moisture rich pad, and is cooled and filtered at the same time. The fresh air is then circulated around the room. This unit is ideal for asthma and hay fever sufferers.
As the fresh cool air is drawn into the space it literally forces hot, stale air out through open windows and doors, flushing the area with fresh clean air hour after hour.
